Did you know....? The mammillaria compressa, more commonly referred to as the "Mother of Hundreds" cactus, is a desert plant we can find dressed from top to bottom in sharp outer spines, only to be juxtaposed with a seasonal crown of bright pink flowers. It carries with it multiple symbolic meanings from strength and beauty to protection and safety to unwavering resilience and survival. My favorite of all the symbolic representations I researched lies in how the "Mother of Hundreds" is a species that forms in large clusters of offset stems. In my mind, I see a 'family" of different characters staying close together, relying on each other while living in the harshest of desert conditions. Even though each one of them may have a "prickly" personality, I see a beautiful picture of "unconditional love." If you think about it, this makes the mammillaria compressa a perfect gift for family milestones, new beginnings, and as a wish for prosperity for the recipient. I chose to go monochrome on this image to draw out the dramatic light and shadows in an effort to enhance the intricate details.
