I loved the sheer drama of that vibrant Yukon gold fighting to take over as summer reluctantly let go. Just off the South Klondike Highway near the famous, turquoise waters of Emerald Lake in Canada's Yukon Territory, I encountered this spectacular branch of Balsam Poplar leaves standing at a striking crossroads. The top leaves were still holding onto a soft, late-summer green, while a dense, radiant cluster of rich amber and gold pushed through from underneath. Set against a dark, moody background, the leaves look almost as if they were glowing from within. Capturing that intense contrast against the deep shadows was such a memorable experience ~ I wanted to bottle up that crisp autumn energy so you can bring a piece of the northern wilderness right into your home.
