There are some landscapes that are so massive, you simply have to widen your frame in the immensity of it all. On our road trip up the South Klondike Highway toward the Yukon, we were moving quickly to reach Emerald Lake before the morning light shifted. However, as we ascended into the high-elevation summit, the sheer expansiveness of the wilderness completely took my breath away. My husband pulled the rental car off into a roadside turnout, and I found a safe vantage point along the road to capture the incredible sense of scale unfolding in front of us. This photograph is the sister piece to Reflections of Tormented Valley, but instead of focusing strictly on the water's mirror, it steps back to celebrate the epic, wide-open expanse of the Great North. Looking out across the horizon, I was just so captivated by how boundless and beautifully wild everything felt. This sweeping view showcases the true face of the Tormented Valley, an otherworldly subalpine borderland perched high at the summit of the White Pass. Shaped by ancient glaciers, this rugged terrain was the actual foot route for the stampeders of the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. By pulling back, this image highlights the incredible tapestry of textures that defines the areafrom the gnarled, weather-beaten krummholz pine trees and rich mosses carpeting the vast middle ground, to the towering mountain ridges piercing the sky. It is a portrait of pure, untouched northern majesty.

A wide-angle, panoramic landscape photograph showcasing the grand scale of the windswept Tormented Valley wilderness. The sprawling composition features a vast middle ground carpeted with rugged subalpine tundra moss and gnarled, dwarf evergreens. In the background, majestic granite mountain peaks rise against a dramatic, cloudy sky, with a sliver of a mirror-like glacial pool visible along the bottom edge.
