Prior to our great Alaskan adventure, we rented a car so that we could drive from Skagway out to Emerald Lake in the Yukon. We knew the Yukon highway would be beautiful, but I wasn't prepared for how a single pocket of water could stop me completely in my tracks. We had started our morning early, eager to catch the landscape before the midday sun shifted the colors. Along the way, the rugged mountain views were endless, but it was the absolute glass-like perfection of this tiny alpine tarn that made me call out for my husband to pull over.
He found a safe turnout nearby, and I ran back down the shoulder with my camera, completely captivated by the flawless symmetry before me. Standing right at the edge, watching the jagged, massive granite peaks resting so softly in that perfectly still water, it felt almost spiritual. There wasn't a single ripple. I am so happy this photograph captures that fragile, fleeting pocket of silence.
This pristine pool sits in the heart of the Tormented Valley, a stark, glacially carved subalpine plateau right on the border of Alaska and British Columbia. It's a place steeped in history, where over a century ago, hopeful stampeders braved the brutal elements on foot during the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. What makes this close-up perspective so special to me is how the fragile mirror below bridges the gap with the grand, ancient stone above, offering a quiet, intimate moment in a historically harsh land.
