This dramatic capture documents a poignant, race-against-the-clock adventure along the vanishing northern frontier. Our itinerary dropped us off at the Mendenhall Glacier recreation area in Juneau, Alaska, with a strict ninety-minute window following an incredible afternoon of whale watching in the Inside Passage. My husband and I immediately high-tailed it down the trail toward Nugget Falls to stand in the roaring mist of that majestic beast. The forest opened up to reveal this breathtaking panoramic vista during our swift, brisk trek back to the transit area. "Mendenhall - Freezing the Shrinking Giant" preserves a magnificent moment in time. This ancient river of ice is rapidly receding and thinning right now. Shifting the camera settings to highlight the natural, deep cerulean blue tones within the crevasses allows the final print to showcase the intricate textures of the ice field against the unyielding mountain ridges. The photograph stands as a timeless, static second of a moving giant. PS: We sprinted back and onto the bus with just moments to spare. I mean, a girl has to capture her photographs, right?
