After capturing the wide vista across a variety of experimental shutter speeds, I realized I was not there merely to document a landscape ~ I was there to live it. The sound of the rushing water echoing through the canyon was deeply meditative and transcendent, a resonant force that compelled me to step closer and truly connect with the environment. Standing face-to-face with this wet glacial monolith was beyond memorable. I knelt at the shore to place my hands directly into the icy waters of Mendenhall Lake, watching the explosive, kinetic splashes erupt where the torrent slams into the ancient stone steps. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated joy. Then, as the minutes of our strict ninety-minute countdown slipped away faster and faster, I prepared myself to turn back toward the trail. I paused to steal one last glance behind me, and that was when my breath caught as a literal dream materialized before my eyes. Right there, dancing through the heavy, crashing spray at the base of the deluge, the late afternoon light split into the magnificent, glowing colors of a pristine rainbow. To witness a spectrum of such vibrant color in a place I already considered one of the most beautiful on Earth meant the world to me. I brought the camera to my eye, ensured my settings were perfectly dialed in to freeze the airborne mist at 1/800th of a second, and captured that fleeting flash of pure wilderness magic forever. A vibrant, close-up fine art photograph captured at a fast 1/800th of a second shutter speed at the base of Nugget Falls in Juneau, Alaska. Millions of sharp, kinetic water droplets are frozen mid-air, refracting the late afternoon light into a brilliant, glowing rainbow arc. The colorful spectrum spans across massive, wet river boulders that showcase a warm, weathered golden-tan and iron-rich mineral texture.
