Rather than booking a standard excursion, we decided to rent a car and drive the miles into the Yukon Territory, determined to witness the famous Emerald Lake in all her colorful glory. The road trip along the Klondike Highway was spectacular, punctuated by stops to photograph cascading waterfalls of varying personalities, historic border signs crossing between Alaska and Canada, and even the surprise of Carcross, warmly billed the smallest desert in the world. We reached our ultimate destination in great time, but the heavy northern clouds were not entirely in my favor that afternoon. While I was able to capture the gorgeous, gemstone green the lake is known to bestow, the overcast sky denied me the crisp water reflections I had originally hoped to see. Yet, with my tripod set up and my camera settings dialed in, I realized I had plenty of time and the wonderful support of my husband beside me. With only two other cars stopping the entire time we were there, the bustling world felt completely distant. I took a quiet moment to reflect on the absolute majesty of the scene, and this photograph captures that treasured memory perfectly. An elevated view looking down at a large, vibrant turquoise lake nestled within a dense evergreen boreal forest under an overcast, cloudy sky. In the foreground, early autumn yellow and green aspen leaves delicately frame the left and bottom edges of the scene. Across the calm water on the right shoreline, a small, solitary cabin with a dark green roof stands quietly among the pines, beneath a distant range of massive gray and purple mountain peaks.
