The image was taken at Mather Point at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The sun had not quite peeked her head over the horizon, but her preceding glow was beginning to cast light upon the canyon, creating a beautiful and colorful scene.

There is a beautiful blue hue left in the sky to separate it from the cityscape and, in between two of the buildings, the viewer can see a commercial airplane coming in for a landing to San Diego airport.

Against a soft blue sky with complementary soft wispy clouds stands the Desert View Watchtower, its lower levels upstaged by the spring greenery in front. The structure sits over the Grand Canyon South Rim with spectacular views of the Colorado River close by.

A view of the Tuzigoot National Monument pueblo from the top looking down the hillside upon which it sits in the Verde Valley of Arizona. The grass beyond the monument is as verdant as the valley for which it is named and the outline of the stone masonry is inspiring and intricate.

A white lighthouse and lone palm rise above a scrub-covered coastal bluff beside blue water. The pairing makes this view satisfying: a familiar beacon set against an open sweep of sea. You can follow the palm's slender trunk to its wind-shaped crown, then let your gaze settle on the lighthouse's clean tower and dark lantern room. Warm light brings touches of gold to the grasses and rough ground, while the ocean shifts from deep blue near the bluff to softer bands at the horizon. Across the water, hazy ridges add depth while the broad sky leaves room to linger over the contrast between the small tower and the immense coast. This is an inviting place to pause on a coastal walk, take in the sea air, and enjoy the steady beacon before continuing along the shore.
