Deemed the most photographed lighthouse in the state of Michigan, this historic lighthouse illuminates the Holland Channel, connecting the great Lake Michigan to Lake Macatawa in Park Township. Its official name is the Holland Harbor South Pierhead Light, but is most commonly referred to as Big Red. Originally built in 1870, it was constructed as a steam-powered fog signal in 1907 with a light tower added in 1936. It's located on the south side of the Holland Channel, connecting the great Lake Michigan to Lake Macatawa in Park Township.
While I would normally have picked a more picturesque day to visit the iconic landmark and photograph its pop of color in a more scenic setting, I made the most of my time there, braving the colder temps of the midwest. It was a far cry from the warm Arizona temps to which I was accustomed and the humid Florida weather from which I just visited. Nevertheless, with my fingertip-less gloves and windbreaker, I spent as much time as my body would allow to capture some images of this beautiful beacon.
My gaze was upon this striking red lighthouse as it stood out against a densely cloudy sky. The stark contrast highlights the structure's vibrant color amidst the moody seascape.
This image is also available with a desaturated background to allow for the pop of red for which the lighthouse is well known to shine.
