Connecting with our furry, fluffy, and funny little friends out in their own habitat has to be one of the most rewarding opportunities for me as a photographer. To capture that image of them locking eyes with me, or even watching them play around in their own environment ~ these are moments that bring my soul joy.

One of our favorite places to visit in Arizona is Prescott, just under 100 miles north of Phoenix. Because of its proximity, we try to visit as often as we can. It is such an environmental contrast to Phoenix and reminds us of our New England / Northeast roots. Each time we visit, we try to explore at least one new area, as there is so much to see in that region. This particular capture was taken during an attempt to visit Wolf Creek Falls in the Prescott National Forest. Sadly, we did not reach the falls (long story for a longer blog post), but we were graced with this absolutely gorgeous visit from a fairly large herd of deer playing around in the woods. There had to have been at least eight to ten of them feeding off the land, leaping across the street, or engaging in a playful staring contest with me.
While I had so much fun in that twenty to thirty minutes just watching them in their natural habitat and snapping away, this one image is my personal favorite. This solitary deer was the last in the herd to cross the road. She just stood there amidst the tall pine trees, sunlight filtering through the branches, highlighting various patches of foliage and rocks. It was like we connected in that one moment, ever so briefly. I said hello and shared my appreciation...she felt safe, posed for a few more moments, and then galloped away to catch up the rest of her friends.
Hmmm...I love that even typing out that story brings a smile to my face.
Please feel free to check out the black and white version of this image, as well. Found in both my black and white collection, as well as my wildlife collection.
