Connecting with our furry, fluffy, and funny little friends out in their own habitat has to be one of the most rewarding opportunities for me as a photographer. To capture that image of them locking eyes with me, or even watching them play around in their own environment ~ these are moments that bring my soul joy.

We were sailing ever so slowly through the breathtaking waters of Endicott Arm, heading up to witness the mighty Dawes Glacier. My husband and I had the perfect view from our verandah...cameras locked and loaded, eagerly scanning the water for Alaska's famous harbor seals. For a while there, it was a total ghost town! However, even without the wildlife, we were practically gasping in awe at the amazing, jagged glacial features passing right before our eyes. Then, just as the ship was beginning to spin, we spotted these beautiful, blissfully unbothered creatures completely lounging around on a chunk of neon-blue ice. My camera was ready, and I just began capturing their wonderfully relaxed bodies. They didn't have a single care in the world! A couple of fun things I learned about what you're looking at: The Perfect Nursery: Harbor seals actively seek out these specific floating icebergs in the fjord to rest and give birth because it keeps them totally safe from hungry killer whales. Its like a natural floating fortress! That Unique Milky Water: The opaque, brownish water beneath the ice isnt mudits a geographical feature called "glacial flour." It happens when massive glaciers like Dawes grind the valley rock down into a super-fine silt over thousands of years, turning the whole fjord into a living watercolor canvas. I meticulously hand-polished and leveled this image to ensure the pure brilliance of that blue iceberg pops perfectly against the ancient textures of the cliff. A sweeping horizontal view captures several harbor seals lounging peacefully atop a luminous, neon-blue iceberg floating within the waters of Endicott Arm, Alaska.
