Connecting with our furry, fluffy, and funny little friends out in their own habitat has to be one of the most rewarding opportunities for me as a photographer. To capture that image of them locking eyes with me, or even watching them play around in their own environment ~ these are moments that bring my soul joy.

We spent a great deal of time searching the waters of Juneau, Alaska, on this particular excursion, but the time spent was entirely worth it. The day turned into an incredible show of natural behaviors, from group bubble-net feeding to endless presentations of beautiful flukes. In total, we may have seen about 15 humpbacks in all during that outing.
Amid a fairly populated vessel of about forty people, I wasn't the only one running from side to side making every attempt to capture at least one great shot of these beautiful creatures, but I was the only one with a heavy 100-500mm lens. I caught this lone humpback whale hanging out on its own, away from the chaotic group action. I was completely captivated by the way the ocean water cascaded so beautifully off its fluke, sheeting downward like a perfect liquid veil. Getting a crisp frame at 300mm in those conditions took some serious footwork (and care), proving that a photograph like this is truly no mere fluke.
